It's impossible to conceive of these children's suffering, as well as the very real culture shock they went through.  These children were born, typically, to uneducated parents. Their lives were abruptly disrupted. They were dislocated in an orphanage briefly and then they suddenly found themselves with adoptive parents who were professionals, college professors, or movie stars, like Joan Crawford for example.  High achieving parents expected what they had paid for and what Georgia Tann had promised-a child with "musical ability" or "a gift for math," or "very bright."  At best, many of these children grew up with a terrible feeling of never being able to measure up.  At worst, they were utterly rejected. This was totally the case with Dickie - my brother Jeff.
